Significant Achievements


The annual report of the General Organization of KFSH&RC highlights the key achievements of the hospital in order to provide the highest level of specialized health care to the people in an integrated educational and research environment. The most important achievements for the year 1438H/1439H (2017 CE) are:



The hospital has always endeavored to raise its capacity to provide specialized medical services to the people. The total number of beds in the organization is 1,663 in each of the main hospitals in Riyadh and Jeddah, marking an increase of 4% compared with the previous year. Of these, 995 beds are in inpatient wings, 225 beds in intensive care, and 443 beds for the single-day treatment.


Organ Transplantation Programs

There has been a phenomenal increase in the number of organ transplants in the hospital. The total number of transplants is 1,481 as of now (of the liver, heart, lung, kidney, pancreas, bone grafts, stem cells, small intestine, and cornea), indicating an increase of 15% compared with the previous year. The results are comparable with the most advanced transplantation centers in the world.


Heart transplantation: A total of 35 heart transplants were performed, representing an increase of 25% compared with the previous year, including 7 heart transplants for children. The heart transplantation program of the hospital is unique, as it is the only active heart transplantation program for children in the whole of Kingdom.

This year, the hospital set a record by performing six heart transplants for six patients aged between 4 and 45 years within a span of 72 h.


Liver transplantation: A total of 137 liver transplants were performed during the year, marking an increase of 5% compared with the previous year, of which includes 42 liver transplants for children under 14 years of age and 95 for adult patients.


Lung transplantation: The hospital performed 37 lung transplants. This marks an increase of 131% compared with the previous year. The organization's lung transplantation program is the only one in the Kingdom. The program was developed using the most advanced methods of transplantation to suit the condition of each patient and applying the latest technologies available for lung perfusion devices. This has resulted in the increase in the number of lung transplants.


Pancreatic transplantation: A total of 16 successful pancreatic transplants were performed during the year, representing an increase of 78% compared with the previous year.


Bone grafting: A total of 436 bone grafting operations were carried out in the hospital. This represented an increase of 33% compared with the previous year with a success rate of 100%.


Stem cell transplantation: The hospital successfully carried out 381 stem cell transplants (for children and adults) with an increase of 0.3% compared with the previous year. Of these, 216 were adults and 165 were children.


Kidney transplantation: With an increase of 8% compared with the previous year, the hospital successfully performed 428 kidney transplants, of which 39 were for children under 14 years of age and 289 were for adult patients.


Intestine transplantation: Intestine transplantation program was started in the hospital. The first intestinal transplant was successfully performed for a patient who suffered from "short bowel syndrome."


Corneal transplantation: A total of 10 corneal transplants were performed during 2017, indicating an increase of 8% compared with the previous year.


Genetic Medicine Program

The total number of therapy sessions in the pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) program reached 279 this year, marking an increase of 46% compared with the previous year. The rate of positive pregnancy testing was 44% compared with 22% in the world. The Heart Disease Assessment Program evaluated 240 cases this year from among 124 families.

Transplants carried out for: Liver, heart, lung, kidney, pancreas, bone grafts, stem cells, small intestine, and cornea, marking an increase of 15% compared with the previous year.



Program for diagnosis and treatment of fetuses

This year, a total of 672 diagnostic and therapeutic procedures during pregnancy were performed as part of the diagnosis and treatment of the fetus program, representing an increase of 25% compared with the previous year. A total of 330 cases were diagnosed with fetal heart disease, indicating an increase of 3% compared with the previous year.

Oncology Centers

The oncology centers of the organization are equipped with the state-of-the-art equipment and provide all surgical, medical, and radiological treatments: A total of 92,509 sessions of chemotherapy were offered, representing an increase of 13% compared with the previous year. Similarly, 262,256 sessions of biomedical treatment were provided during the reporting period. The number of radiotherapy sessions for cancer patients was 474,000, indicating an increase of 14% compared with the previous year.

Blood Vessels Program

The blood vessels program of the hospital boasted its success by providing specialized and quality care using the latest technology. For the first time in the region, branched stent grafts were used to treat the abdominal aortic aneurysm and save the iliac arteries of a 60- year-old patient suffering from an aortic aneurysm.




Neurosciences Program

The Neurosciences Program continues to provide outstanding services in treating benign and malignant tumors in the nervous system. With the help of the Brain Suite, the hospital has performed 272 surgeries to remove complex tumors in sensitive areas of the brain, representing an increase of 202% compared with the previous year at the main hospital in Riyadh.

The hospital has also been a world leader in treating Parkinson's disease with the help of Dudopa pump, as well as in other advanced services such as epilepsy treatment and surgery.


Advanced Home Medical Care Programs


Home Respiratory Therapy Program

The main hospital in Riyadh runs the largest number of home respiration centers in the Kingdom and the entire Middle East. The total number of existing patients enrolled in the program this year is 30, while the number of patients admitted to the program since its inception is 51. As a result of constant follow-up, the rate of occurrence of inflammation and complications among the enrolled patients has considerably decreased.

Home Care Program

A total of 780 patients were covered under this program during the reporting year. Of these, 628 were non-palliative patients whereas 152 patients with cancer needed palliative and nursing care. They were administered muscle relaxants for palliative care at their homes. With the help of patient care call service, 220 phone calls were attended after working hours. It is worth noting that the kidney dialysis service at home has been initiated this year, and four patients with chronic conditions who were unable to visit the dialysis center have used this facility so far.

Global accreditations and recognitions

The organization continued to receive accreditations, recognitions, and awards from local, regional, and international institutions and agencies, most notably the re-accreditation of the main hospital in Riyadh by the Joint Commission for International Accreditation of Health Entities as an Academic Medical Center.

Health cooperation services with the Kingdom's hospitals and international medical centers

The Health Cooperation Program of the Organization aims to assist and support hospitals and medical centers providing cooperation in various areas of medical care such as inpatient care, intensive care, quality care, and health education besides organizing conferences that are accredited locally, regionally, and globally.

The number of hospitals participating in local cooperation services was 28. Four intensive care units were added to the tele-intensive care program. The total number of tele-intensive care units reached 40 units, marking an increase of 11% compared with the previous year. Through these units, services were provided to 583 patients, representing an increase of 13% compared with the previous year.



The organization has achieved global quality standards in the field of medical education, which is evidenced by the accreditation of the main hospital in Riyadh by the Joint Commission International. The hospital was also accredited as a medical academic center for the second consecutive term from March 31, 2017, to March 30, 2020.

The organization started 3 more fellowship programs to take the total number of fellowship programs to 45, all supervised by the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties. The total number of subspecialty programs offered by the organization was 95 including 51 programs for joint subspecialty disciplines under the umbrella of the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties, which issues certificates for these programs. As regards the remaining 44 programs, an agreement was concluded with the Saudi Authority for Health Specialties to provide training jointly with the hospital in 39 programs exclusively for the hospital. No agreement for training has been signed with the Authority in respect of remaining five specialties. However, they have been recognized as training courses and are under assessment and consideration of the Authority.

The number of doctors graduating from the fellowship programs this year was 73 and those graduating from the super specialty programs were 109. The total number of interns undergoing training in the organization was 1,167.

It was agreed to grant scholarship to 79 employees including 59 doctors, 4 employees pursuing a bachelor’s degree and 12 pursuing a master’s degree, and 4 employees pursuing a PhD degree. At present, the total number of employees heading the mission is 2,344 including 143 doctors, 28 graduates, 30 post-graduates, and 33 PhD scholars.





The Research Centre at KFSH&RC is one of the most advanced research centers in the field of medical and scientific research. It has 15 departments and centers, many of which carry out high-level scientific research, to make available and also to use the most advanced and sophisticated systems for treatment developed through established scientific methods. As such, advanced researches contribute to the development of future clinical practices by the best group of scientists and practitioners. The center has 125 scientists and 278 technicians in various disciplines armed with the high level of experience and skills.


The priority research areas of the hospital include the following: cancers, heart diseases, blood vessels, diabetes, environmental health, infectious diseases, stem cell therapy, and genetics. The center has emerged as one of the leading centers in the Middle East for research on rare diseases.


A total of 510 scientific papers were published by the hospital in prestigious scientific journals on various scientific areas as per the following statistics: 11% on genetics and genetic diseases, 10% on cancers, 9% on general internal medicine diseases, 7% on heart diseases and 5% on each of blood diseases, immunology, molecular biochemistry, and neurological diseases. The average impact factor for the research published by the organization was 20.2 for each paper, thus exceeding the global average of 13.5 and the Saudi average of 8.5 citations for each paper.


Cancer was the topmost research area with more than 60 research papers, especially on breast and thyroid cancers. The most prominent research was related to the study of new mechanisms of the proliferation and invasion of cancer cells, especially stem cells. Indeed, genetic and hereditary diseases represent the important fields of research today. More than 40 genes have been identified as containing genetic mutation related to various genetic diseases.


The database of more than 3,500 genetic mutations, causing various hereditary diseases among individuals or families of Arab origin, has been expanded, and more than 50 scientific papers have been published in refereed international journals in this area. Many other achievements in the field of research have been detailed in this report.



Healthcare Information Technology Affairs (HITA) operates, and has been designated, as the organizations Strategic Partner in Innovation and Excellence – SPInE.  HITA has driven KFSH&RC (Riyadh & Jeddah) being the first HIMSS 7 Ambulatory EMRAM (Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model) and HIMSS 6 AMAM (Adoption Model for Analytics Model) designated facilities outside of North America.  This not only highlights the growth and maturity of its Electronic Medical Record but also the level of integration, operability and data analytics that exists within KFSH&RC.


This same level of clinical digital excellence and focus can be found in KFSH&RC’s business applications as well.  KFSH&RC was awarded the world’s largest Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementation and integration.  Both these clinical and business applications are further enhanced through their interoperability by the flow of data back and forth that has greatly improved patient and employee experiences.


HITA continues to focus on the Patient Journey by challenging its current digital footprint to positively disrupt healthcare norms.  Our digital focus is built around the patient experience by ensuring staff are able to deliver care in an automated, attentive and efficient manner.
