Dr. Qasim Alqasabi, Chief Executive Officer of King Faisal Specialized Hospital &Research Centre has inaugurated the RADIATION IN MEDICINE SYMPOSIUM & WORKSHOPS on Monday, accompanied by Dr. Hisham Al Gedhee, Chief Executive Officer of Saudi Food and Drugs Authority. The conference was held and organized by King Faisal Specialized Hospital &Research Centre (Gen. Org.) and lasted for 5 days.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Qasim Alqasabi pointed out that around 20 thousand diagnostic procedures using MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), 7000 diagnostic procedures using Interventional radiation and around 4000 tests using PET (Positron Emission Tomography) was conducted in 2016.

“King Faisal Specialized Hospital &Research Centre (Gen. Org.) was accredited by the International Atomic Energy Agency since 2013 as a collaboration center in the region and the accreditation was renewed for the next 4 years” he added.

Dr. Qasim Alqasabi pointed out that Biomedical Physics Department at King Faisal Hospital provides calibration services for the radiology equipment and more than 40 thousand radiation exposure reading was conducted last year for more than 5 thousands individuals working in radiology and radiation. As a result, King Faisal Specialized Hospital &Research Centre (Gen. Org.) got the approval of the International Atomic Energy Agency to start a fellowship program in Medical Nuclear Physics.

Delivering a speech on the occasion, Dr. Belal Moftah, Chairman of Biomedical Physics Department at King Faisal Specialized Hospital &Research Centre mentioned that 80 speakers participated in this symposium with 10 international speakers from United States, Canada, Spain, UK and Austria are all sharing and discussing the latest advancements and future innovative approaches in the field of radiation in medicine through 150 lectures given throughout this 5 days symoisium. They will be discussing the radiation therapy for oncology, MRI, Nuclear Medicine, Biomedical Physics and radiation precautions and safety.

In addition to that, Dr. Belal pointed out that there will be 8 didactic lectures followed by 12 workshops to discuss:

  • appropriateness Criteria for Radiology: Awareness, Utilization, Implementation and Impact

  • Diagnostic Reference Levels in Medical Imaging: Protocol Optimization and Patient Dose Reduction

  • MRI: Basics and Safety

  • Quality Control in CT Scanners: ACR Testing

  • Quality Control of SPECT Systems

  • Radiotherapy Treatment Planning: What you Ought to Know

Finally there will be a Radiation Safety Officer Course to raise awareness in the safety measures for those working in the field of Radiology medicine for save and effective radiation therapy treatment.
