Under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Faisal bin Bandar bin Abdulaziz, Governor of Riyadh Region, inaugurates on Monday morning (February 12, 2018) the events of the International Conference on Radiation Medicine (ICRM) under the title “Clinical Applications & Innovative Approaches” organized by King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre, in cooperation with the most prominent international and local authorities including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), World Health Organization (WHO), AlFaisal University and Ministry of Health, knowing that this conference will last for five days in the premises of AlFaisal University in Riyadh.

His Excellency Dr. Majid Al Fayyadh, Chief Executive Officer of KFSH&RC stated in the inauguration speech of this conference, that KFSH&RC acquires an important field of the radiation medicine, namely radiation therapy for tumor within comprehensive services provided for patients with tumor through the latest devices of radiation therapy and advanced technologies operated by specialized cadres according to the international standards, pointing out the administration of (25000) doses of radiation therapy within the year 2017 for thousands of patients with tumor receiving treatment in KFSH&RC, with 10% increase compared to 2016.

“One of the most important applications of radiation medicine is the use of diagnostic and interventional radiology. The Radiology Department at KFSH&RC provides multiple specialized services at the hands of high efficient cadres through the use of the latest and most advanced devices in the region. The Radiology Department implemented during the last year more than 250,000 procedures (251,927) including the procedures of MRI, nuclear radiology, and interventional radiology” Dr. Al Fayyadh added.

Dr. Al Fayyadh also clarified that KFSH&RC performs a vital role in monitoring the safety of practitioners working in different radiology departments and radiation medicine, through conducting examination and reading of the radiation level for about (30,000) cards during the last year 2017, attributed to more than (7000) technicians, specialists, and physicians in multiple hospitals across the Kingdom, driven by concern and attention of health of practitioners working in this field.

Dr. Al Fayyadh revealed that Radiation Dosimetry Laboratory at KFSH&RC gets recognized by the International Atomic Energy Authority (IAEA) as a secondary laboratory, to become the only one of its kind in the region to be recognized by IAEA, it provides calibration of measurement devices used in the radiation therapy efficiently, in order to ensure the accuracy and safety of the radiation dose administered to the patient.

Dr. Al Fayyadh received from the IAEA representative the accreditation renewal certificate of KFSH&RC as a cooperating medical center in the field of guaranteed quality of Radiation Medicine usage for five years, knowing that KFSH&RC is the only medical institution in the region to receive this advanced classification, due to applying the highest international standards in this field.
