The Heart Centre is a tertiary center for cardiovascular care with international standards of excellence. We lead the region in many of the most advanced cardiac care treatments and state of the art procedures.

Pediatric and adult patients are evaluated in highly specialized clinics by multidisciplinary staff who are uniquely trained and certified by either North American or European Boards in their respective medical subspecialties; patients are offered therapies consistent with disease-specific management guidelines in accordance with international standards.

Annually we admit over 2500 inpatients to our Pediatric Cardiology, Adult Cardiology, Cardiac Surgery and Cardiac Intensive Care beds and perform thousands of surgeries, specialized procedures and diagnostic tests for our patients which are not done anywhere else in the Kingdom.

For over 30 years the Heart Centre has been caring for patients with many chronic and acute conditions such as hypertension, heart failure and cardiomyopathy and others. Patients are referred to us from all over the middle-east because of the specialty care we offer.

We are proud of our team of highly trained physicians, nurses and allied healthcare staff. We consistently deliver care and quality outcomes which have earned us designations and accreditations from the Joint Commission International, the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care, Accreditation for Cardiovascular Excellence and European Laboratory Accreditation through the European Society of Cardiology and the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging.

The primary mission of the Heart Center is to provide the people of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with the highest quality of tertiary medical care for all types of cardiovascular diseases in a coordinated and balanced program through clinical practice, teaching and research.

Total commitment to ensure that the needs of the patient and their families always come first. This will be achieved through the pursuit of continuous quality improvement of patient care based on scientific knowledge, evidence-based research, patient education and integrated health care networks.

Heart Centre Milestones

1978   Cardiac surgery started as part of the Department of Surgery with a     team from Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, USA First Cardiac Surgical Center in Saudi Arabia

1985   Baylor contract ends and a KFSH team is established consisting of cardiac surgery, adult cardiology and pediatric cardiology with one cath lab, one OR, four ICU beds and six CCU beds

1986   First arterial switch operation for complex congenital heart performed

1987   First homograft implanted

1988   The Department of Cardiovascular Diseases was established. Service expanded to four cath labs, four ORs, nineteen CSICU beds and ten CCU beds

1989   First heart transplant was performed

1990   First Ross procedures was performed

1991   First Cardiomyoplasty procedures was performed

1998   The sequential bilateral lung transplantation done on Oct 15, 1998 is the first for the hospital

Establishment of the Congenital Heart Defects Registry (CHDR)

1999   Cath and echo labs were upgraded and digitalized. A departmental server was installed and the department became networked

2001   Aortic vascular endo-stenting performed for aortic aneurysm

2004   King Faisal Heart Institute was established

2005   Started Surgical (MAZE) ablation for the treatment of chronic atrial fibrillation

Introduced 3D Echocardiography in cardiac clinical practice

Introduced new diagnostic contrast agent for enhancement during the echocardiography

Established routine use of radial artery conduit during coronary bypass

Established minimally invasive endoscopic saphenous vein harvesting during coronary bypass

Successfully performed open heart/VSD closure as a hybrid procedure in the operating room

Introduced Transcutaneous Fontan procedure for complex congenital heart disease

Introduced biventricular pacing for treatment of congestive heart disease

Introduced Cardiostim Flowmeter to measure coronary graft flows during coronary bypass

Heart Centre is renowned worldwide for its quality in the following areas of cardiac care:

The only center for heart transplantation in Saudi Arabia and in the Gulf States Region

Mechanical heart assists devices for bridge to transplant or recovery - one of the very few centers in the area

High-risk open heart surgery in hemodialysis patients

High-risk complicated repeat congenital open heart surgery in pediatric population

High-risk complicated repeat open heart surgery in adults, children and newborns

High-risk complicated repeat multi-valve procedures

Open heart surgery in patients with multiple chronic diseases

  8. Non- Invasive Cardiology Lab:

The Non-Invasive Cardiology Lab is one of the busiest departments at KFSH & RC; in 2014 the Lab performed over 87,000 procedures.  The Lab has three (3) main sections, Adult Echo, Pediatric Echo and Electrophysiology Section and two (2) additional sections, Nursing and Administration.  Teams of cardiologists, technologists and nurses work together, supported by the administrative staffs, to provide the highest quality of non-invasive cardiac investigations for patients of KFSH & RC.  Investigations include, but are not limited to, 2D and 3D transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, stress echocardiography, contrast echocardiography, strain and speckle tracking analysis, electrocardiography, ambulatory Holter and Blood Pressure monitoring, exercise stress testing, and pacemaker and internal cardiac defibrillator (ICD) analysis.

Hours of operation are 07:30-17:00hrs, Sunday to Wednesday, and 07:30-16:00hrs, on a Thursday; an after-hours on-call service is provided for all procedures except ECGs.

The Lab also provides a service to patients at the Children's Cancer Centre (CCC), for VIPs in their own home, patients involved in research studies, for example Oncology patients receiving Herceptin, for possible heart donors located within the Kingdom or in neighbouring countries within the Middle East, and to all other organ transplant departments as part of their pre-screening process for donor and recipient patients.

   9-Cardiac Cath Lab (Invasive)

MISSION: To be continually updated with the latest technology for the diagnosis, treatment and management of cardiovascular diseases for the people of Saudi Arabia using a multidisciplinary team approach.
VISION: To offer exemplar services comparable with leading international cardiovascular centers so that there is no longer a need for Saudi nationals to travel abroad to interventional cardiac treatment.

Strategic Priorities

The strategic priorities of the Cardiac Cath Lab are in line with the Strategic Plan Road-Map of KFSH&RC and include:

  1. To develop as a world leading center of excellence in the delivery of evidence-based healthcare.
  2. To increase capacity by the expansion of services.
  3. To empower staff for improved efficiency and decision making.
  4. To enhance staff recruitment and retention.

European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI) Echo Laboratory Accreditation in TTE/TEE - November 2001.

The Heart Centre’s Cardiac Cath Lab (Invasive) is proud to announce that it has achieved full accreditation status on the 14th of June 2013 for our cardiac catheterization and percutaneous coronary intervention program from the Accreditation for Cardiovascular Excellence (ACE) organization.

This recognition places KFSH&RC-Riyadh as the first international facility to achieve this distinction outside of the United States.

In September 2012 the KFSH&RC with the Heart Centre was accredited as a Chest Pain Center with PCI and was the first in the Kingdom and the second in the region to attain this status.

The Society of Chest Pain Centers was founded in 1998 and was seen to be a bridge between cardiology, emergency medicine and emergency medical services with the mission of reducing cardiac deaths.

This operational model for care of the ACS patient includes processes for early diagnosis and treatment from the time the patient experiences symptoms to the time of discharge encompassing the entire facility with the Cardiac Cath Lab playing a vital and significant role.
