We care for children from all over Saudi Arabia with a wide variety of medical conditions. Their ages range from infancy to 14 years. The Pediatric clinic has recently been renovated to be brighter and more cheerful while creating a comfortable setting for the children and their parents. There are colorful pictures on the walls and the nurses wear brightly colored jackets and smiles in the hope of making the unit more ‘child friendly’. The nurses are all qualified, experienced Pediatric nurses who come from many different cultures thus providing a variety of experiences. While exhibiting a genuine fondness for children, the nurses provide first class and efficient care to the patients and families as well as assisting the Physicians in providing the necessary medical treatment.
Most nurses speak some Arabic and are able to converse with the patients and families. There is an Interpreter assigned to the area to work with the non-Arabic speaking doctors and to be available for any other translation needed. Most of the Pediatric Sub-specialty clinics are held in this area with numerous physicians attending on a daily basis. Each specialty clinic is considered as 1 office and 2 examination rooms and this is especially important in Pediatrics as the patients are always accompanied by 1, 2 or more family members and require more space during their examination/consultation. The clinic boasts a Pharmacist and Dietician, who are available to consult with the Physicians, clarify orders and provide patient and family teaching. Computers are being used to conduct the daily business of the clinic and the nurses are fast becoming ‘computer literate’. A cross-training program has been encouraged throughout Ambulatory Care and a Pediatric Clinic Information
Guide for staff was developed. The guide was developed with the hope that time
spent in the Pediatric Clinic would be rewarding both personally and
professionally and staff will feel enriched by the experience. To date some of
the staff nurses from the Pediatric Clinic have participated in the
cross-training program, spending two weeks in the different clinical areas. This
experience has better equipped them in taking care of the adult patients.
