PATIENT CARE DEPARTMENT

SCOPE OF SERVICE:

The Medical Clinic is patient/family focused and provides a wide range of specialized services for adults as well as pediatric

in certain specialty. Medical Clinic is divided into 6 modular areas covering the following services :

1. Internal Medicine Clinic, that includes:

    -Gastroenterology

    -Rheumatology

    -Dermatology

    -Allergy

    -Pulmonary

    -Endocrinology

    -Anticoagulant Clinic

    -Thyroid Cancer Clinic

    -Pre and Post Liver Transplant Clinic

    -Lung Transplant Clinic

    -Immunology

    -Sleep Medicine

    With Subspecialty Clinic that covers:

    - Liver Transplant

    -Lung Transplant

    -Thyroid Cancer

    -Ultra Violet Light (PUVA & LASER)

    -Interventional Radiology Clinic

    -Combined Plastic Surgery Clinic.

2.  Cardiology and cardiovascular surgery clinics:

     It covers both Cardiac as well as Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Clinics.

    New clinic will be covered by social workers every Wednesday pm

5. Clinical Pharmacotherapy Clinic:

    By Clinical Pharmacist every Saturday and  Monday am.

6. Pain Clinic and acupunctures:

    Frequent procedures done in the clinic:

    -Laser treatment/procedures with patient under GA

    -Ultraviolet light therapy (PUVA)

    -Allergy skin test

    -Punch biopsy

    -Synovial fluid aspiration

    -Joint injections

    -POCT

    -Endocrine challenge test

    -Dressing and wound care

    -Injections and all types of vaccinations

    -Pulmonary function test –spirometry

    Nurse Clinics in Medical Clinic:

    -Gastroenterology nurse closed.

    -Rheumatology nurse.

    -Thyroid cancer nurse.

    -PUVA nurse.

    -Cardiology nurse clinic.

    -Nurse medical clinic.

    -Allergy/injection nurse.

    -Endocrine nurse clinic.

Hours of operations:

5 days per week from Saturday through to Wednesday.

From 0800 till 1800hrs except Wednesday its till 1700hrs.

Lunch break for the clinic from 12:30 till 13:30 while clinic will be covered with at least one nurse from the start

till the end, including lunch break time.

And if clinic will be running late one or more staff will cover it till its over and last patient went home.

Criteria for Admission into Services:

We provide the best care available for our patient, and we complement the hospital mission by providing tertiary care to

the citizen of Saudi Arabia. And new patient need to provide full detailed medical report and letter of acceptance to

eligibility were the file will be open.

Medical clinic staff is an international mix and need specific qualifications and competency skills to meet the hospital

standard of performance and of care.

TOTAL NUMBER OF STAFF IS 44 AND THE AVERAGE DAILY CENSUS OF PATIENTS RANGING FROM 300-400 PATIENTS /DAY.

With around 6000 patient visit per month and 65000 patient visit per year.-1425 report

The staffing schedule is based on patients volume and skill level of the staff with special consideration to the clinic were

procedures is performed were extra staff is needed.

The head nurse or his assistant will distribute the staff to the clinic were the team leader the one responsible for giving

direct assignment of each staff following the above mentioned standard.

How are in-service /continuing education programs provided to maintain staff competency?

Nursing education and research provide in-service and continuing education programs for staff learning needs. Competency

based education (CBE) provide specific performance criteria which nursing staff outcomes can be assessed. CBE

emphasizes verification of each nurse’s competence to provide safe care of patients.

The medical clinic staffs hold weekly in-services on clinical related topic that create a discussion and increase the

knowledge of all the member of medical clinic staff.

Staff meetings are held on monthly basis or even more once needed to instruct a new practice or to inform any new practice.

And team leader meeting might be weekly if indicated to discuss any issue related to daily practice of the clinic.

Annual performance evaluations are mechanism to recognize education accomplishments.

And of course the on line self study modules are in excellent way of education that all staff needs to do it before his contract is due.

Required competencies:

-Unit specific competencies

-BCLS or ECC to renew every 2 years

-Fire and safety,  yearly updates.

-Infection control on line self study module.

-Basic adult and pediatric physical assessments.

Method of communication with other departments in the hospital:

Internal and external method of communications.

Internally:

There is a direct communication between Physician / Nurses / Pharmacist/ Laboratory staff and all health team workers on

daily basis or by telephone discussions, unit staff meeting on monthly basis or as indicated.

Sometimes the communication will be through written materials in a board or posters.

Externally:

Medical clinic communication is by telephone, E-mail, faxes, and written memos. Or any direct verbal communication, or thru any of the systems that link nurses to other departments like ICIS, PACS, etc.

Describe Collaborative Relationships With Other Departments:  

The Head Nurse and staff participate on many multidisciplinary committees, as well as on Hospital wide performance improvement groups and committees involving many other departments.  Representatives from other departments are invited to attend staff meetings when new programs are introduced or if complicated issues arise, to facilitate a mutually desirable resolution.

Representative from the clinic will participate in any hospital activities like the nurse recognition day or other activities.

DISCHARGE CRITERIA:

In the out patient setting the patient will come for his visit and will go home after that, still some of the patient will need collaborative activity of the physician ,the nurses ,social workers and other health team workers to plan his :

1.       Diet

2.       Medication regimen.

3.       Activities.

4.       Next visit date and time.

5.       Laboratory result.

6.       Any special needs for his case.

7.       Social problems.

8.       Home supplies.
