"Epidemiology: Translating Science to Health Care"
27 – 28 November 2007/17 – 18 Dhu Al Qada 1428

Dear Colleagues:

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Riyadh for the 7th Scientific Meeting of the International Epidemiology Association – Eastern Mediterranean Region under the theme "Epidemiology: Translating Science to Health Care".

For the past three decades, Epidemiology has went through fundamental shifts in concepts that involved both the role of the environment in causing human disease, and the epidemiologic approach to disease and to inference about biologic causation. In the 20th century, epidemiologists increasingly have addressed the complex etiology of chronic diseases such as coronary disease and cancer as the diseases emerged as leading causes of mortality and morbidity in many populations.

Recent decades have been marked by the development of causal theories and quantitative methods, and the increasing use of sophisticated statistical models. Furthermore, Epidemiology has expanded to include the design of clinical trials, genetic linkage and association studies, the use of laboratory methods to measure exposures more adequately and to define biomarkers for disease and exposure. However, the aim of all of these advances remains to provide the basis for developing and evaluating preventive measures and public health policies to promote health care.

Dedicated members of the Organizing and Scientific Committees constituted from several Health Institutions and Universities in the kingdom have formulated aims and goals of this meeting to enlighten participants with latest updates in the field of epidemiology. The scientific program of this meeting will cover several topics on global epidemiology, clinical epidemiology, nutritional epidemiology, molecular epidemiology, infectious and chronic diseases epidemiology, health surveillance, and epidemiological methods that will be presented by prominent international and national keynote speakers from well-known medical centers worldwide.

All members of both committees join me in extendin to you all, our warmest welcome and regards. We are confident that everyone will benefit from this diverse and enlightening symposium.

Thank you and we wish you a successful symposium and a pleasant stay in Riyadh.

Ali Saeed Al-Zahrani, MD, PhD
