"Minimally Invasive, Laparoscopic, Robotic Surgery
Surgery of the 21st Century"
20-22 September 2004/ 06-08 Shaban 1425

Dear Colleagues:

It gives me great pleasure to invite you to our Symposium "Laparoscopic / Minimally Invasive Surgery" ("Surgery of the 21st Century") which will be held at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on 20-22 SEPTEMBER 2004 / 06-08 SHABAN 1425.

Minimally Invasive Surgery is the fastest growing surgical specialty in the developed world. It is estimated that within the next 10 years, 90% of today's open operations will then be performed via a minimal access procedure.

The first laparoscopic cholecystectomy was done by the successful coupling of a telescope to a one-chip camera in 1986 (The Optic Revolution).  Now, laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the number one operation performed world-wide.  Advancements in computer technology and connectivity have resulted in a 2nd revolution of computer-aided surgery and telesurgery.

Our multi-disciplinary Symposium program provides an educational curriculum encompassing nine surgical specialty areas.  Your participation in this Symposium will give you the opportunity to meet and interact with world authorities in the field of minimally invasive surgery. Live surgeries will be broadcast world-wide using the most advanced telecommunication systems. We will see surgeon-interfaced robotic computer systems and computer-assisted surgery (CAS) images being scanned into a 3-D virtual reality.  Revolutionary image-guided techniques using micro-surgical instruments will allow our surgical experts to transmit hand movements to robotic arms and manipulate tissue with dexterity and precision through laparoscopic ports.   Lectures and discussion will precede or follow all live surgeries.

We hope that you will join with your colleagues in Saudi Arabia to share your experiences and knowledge and discover our deep cultural Arab heritage, its magic, deserts, palm tress, public markets and much more.
