His Excellency Dr. Majid Alfayyadh, Chief Executive Officer of the General Organiztion of King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSH&RC) in Riyadh inaugurated the 9th Annual International Conference of Saudi Critical Care Society at King Salman Hall being held under the theme: "Pursuit of Excellence" in collaboration with the Saudi Critical Care Society. The 3-day conference is being attended by 100 speakers from within and outside Saudi Arabia featuring 100 lectures and 25 academic sessions.

H.E. Dr. Alfayyadh stressed the importance of excellence and quality in the provision of medical care, especially in the field of critical care, explaining that it is one of the key values and strategic objectives of the hospital in line with 2030 Saudi vision in the field of health.

For his part, Dr. Khalid Maghrabi, chairman of Critical Care Medicine at KFSH&RC-Riyadh, said that the conference aims to draw attention to the challenges in the field of critical care in Saudi Arabia and showcase the hospital's long experience in organ transplantation and treatment of cancer in the domain of critical care. The deliberations of the conference are expected to immensely benefit the health sectors in Saudi Arabia and raise the level of critical care in the country helping us meet the increasing requirements of special cases of critical care. The conference featured special scientific sessions on quality assurance in the medical services provided in critical care units to ensure safety of patients and their protection from the risks they may be exposed to during the treatment such as infection or direct and indirect medical errors and to explore effective mechanisms for their prevention. The most prominent challenges that the critical care departments in Saudi Arabia are facing are the lack of specialized medical staff, resulting in an increasing pressure on the critical care providers, as pointed out by Dr. Maghrabi.

Dr. Maghrabi further said that the conference targeted critical care workers, notably consultant doctors, interns and intensive care nurses, respiratory technicians and therapists, nutritionists, and pharmacists of critical care units. He pointed out that the papers being presented in the conference on various aspects of critical care treatment are expected to enhance the understanding of pathophysiology and find out optimal treatment methods for many common diseases, notably liver and septic diseases, heart diseases, circulatory system diseases, respiratory and neurological diseases, and hematology/oncology diseases besides lectures on the care for patients undergoing liver transplant. Leading international experts and consultants on critical care medicine from the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany participated in the conference either by physical presence or through video conferencing in addition to 100 participants form Saudi and Arabian Gulf Countries.
