Pathology & Laboratory Medicine

 

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Provide a comprehensive range of clinical services, by performing nearly eight million standard billable tests (SBTs) annually supporting and advanced care facility.It is also responsible for the clinical laboratory operations at the King Fahad National Children's Cancer Centre and Research (KFNCCC&R).
The Department is proud to have a multinational work force of around 400 employees including Pathologists, Clinical Scientists, Technologists and support personnel representing 29 countries from all over the world. 

We provides training, continuing education and in-service instructions for residents, fellows, medical technologists, physicians , nursing and other members of the healthcare team the scope and diversity of services and multinational expertise offer a unique opportunity for personal and professional growth.

The Department is constantly striving to provide the highest quality of laboratory service through an efficient and cost-effective management of resources. The laboratory is functionally organized under 14 sections:

  • Anatomic pathology: including Histology, Cytology and Electron Microscope.
  • Blood Bank:
    • Transfusion services: processing, Crossmatch/Transfusion.
    • Donor services: Blood Donation, Apheresis.
  • Clinical Biochemistry: including General Chemistry, special Chemistry and therapeutic drug monitoring.
  • Molecular genetics.
  • Hematology and Flow cytometry: including Hematomorphology/Bone Marrow Processing, hemostasis/coagulation and General, Special and Automated hematology.
  • Immunopathology: including immunology, HLA, HLA-DNA and cellular immunology.
  • Stem Cell and Cord Blood Bank
  • Assisted Reproductive Technology: including In-Vitro fertilization/Reproductive Biology.
  • Specimen collection and processing.
  • Microbiology: including Bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, urinalysis serology, virology and molecular virology.
  • Toxicology/bioanalysis: including food toxicology, water analysis and substance analysis
  • Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) satellite lab.
