Adult and Pediatric Orthopedic Spinal Surgery

Program Information

This clinical fellowship is a combined two-year adult and pediatric spinal clinical experience. The goal of the fellowship is to train orthopedic surgeons in the diagnosis and management of diseases of the spine. The program is a multidisciplinary service dedicated to the management of individuals with spine disease. Emphasis of the program is upon decision-making and surgical techniques of spinal surgery. The latter includes decompression techniques both anterior and posterior; cervical and lumbar disc arthroplasties; minimally invasive spine surgery (such as XLIF, primary and revision scoliosis, management of osteoporotic fractures, vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty and stent kyphoplasty); and management of primary spine and metastatic disease.

At the end of the fellowship, the trainee will have experience and ability to independently perform surgical approaches, decompressions, and instrumentation in areas of the spine from the occiput to sacrum. Combined teaching conferences are scheduled weekly with discussion and presentation of recent cases and complex management cases. Monthly presentation rounds are held with full attendance of Orthopedic spine surgeons. Weekly outpatient clinics are performed with the attending staff and informal teaching is administered to junior house staff and residents. During the course of the two- year training, a clinical research project mutually agreed upon by the fellow and the supervisor must be completed prior to the conclusion of the program.
