Program Overview:

The Department of Family Medicine at King Faisal Specialist Hospital Research Centre (KFSH&RC) provides optimal medical care and consultation to patients, conducts research and training in collaboration with other departments, and prepares training physicians to be qualified, professional and competent. The department also conducts research in areas of clinical relevance to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Residency Training Program follows regulations and requirements of the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties, with the goal of training residents to acquire the competencies of an experienced practitioner as outlined in the SaudiMED FM 2020 Competency Framework.

Welcome Message

Welcome and congratulations on joining the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre Family Medicine Residency Training Program.

Family Medicine is the heart of primary care. There is no other field of medical practice in which you can help so many different types of patients and see wide a range of medical conditions.

Our program is devoted to the goal of providing excellent education in a stimulating and supportive environment. We treat residents as colleagues, encouraging resident autonomy and decision-making while ensuring quality of care.
The mission of our department is to provide excellent clinical care, educate future leaders in the field of Family Medicine and conduct research to improve and advance the specialty.

Our values, we work with and care for all people, believe that every person deserves excellent health care and we practice evidence-based medicine, inter-professional team care.

Training Structure

Three years of accredited training which starts on 1st of October of each year. Each year, every resident is entitled for 4 weeks annual leave, which should be organized well in advance and discussed with the mentor and the program director.

During the 3 years, each of the residents will be doing the following training:

1- Family Medicine: 16 weeks in R1, 12 weeks in R2 and most of R3

2- 7 Major Obligatory Specialties: Must be done. Which include:

  • Internal medicine (12 weeks)
  • General Surgery (4 weeks)
  • Pediatrics (8weeks)
  • OB/Gyn (8weeks)
  • Emergency medicine (adults 4 weeks and pediatric 4 weeks)
  • Psychiatry (8 weeks)
  • Dermatology (4 weeks)
  • All the above specialties have to be done during junior

 

3- multi-option: 4 months in R2 and the will be in the following:

  • ENT -Ophthalmology -Orthopedics -Radiology

4- Selective: will be done for 1 month in R3, after discussion with the mentor and the program director. The following are example of selective rotation: Geriatrics, Palliative, DM and women's health.

5- Elective: will be done for 1 month in R3, after discussion with the mentor and the program director. The following are example of elective rotation:

Geriatrics- Palliative - Home health care - DM - Women health

Adolescent medicine -Occupational health -Research field (if trainee going to conduct full research thesis) and others as appropriate.

 

Educational Activities

Attendance at morning report, grand rounds, journal clubs, case presentation, and Weekly Academic Day Activities (WADA) is mandatory The SCFHS requires more than 75 attendance in the academic activities failure to achieve this percentage will result in repeating the year. 

Volunteering

Mandatory 60 hours outside working hours during any time of the residency. It can be continuous/ interrupted and the resident has to come up with documented evidence for his/ her work.

The following are examples of volunteering activities:

  • Hajj/ Umrah Campaign
  • Health Education campaigns to the public.
  • Mass Media awareness Campaigns.
  • Mobile Clinics to remote & rural areas
  • Mobile Blood donations campaign
  • Vaccination campaigns
  • Family or Children with Special Needs Association
  • Any Charity Committee
  • Others (Health Care) related

 

Research Activities

In our department we have decided that each resident has to submit full research and not only research proposal. Each resident has to submit full research proposal by end of R2 (before allowed to set the promotion exam). Maximum 4 weeks (of the elective rotation) can be given to the resident to complete research manuscript.



Awards

  • Mayada Ahmed Program Director for Family Medicine Residency Training Program was awarded The Best Residency Training Program for AY 2021 in King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre.
  • Nouf Almasoud and Dr. Mohammed Aldossari awarded the 1st place in the oral presentation in the Annual Resident Research Day at KFSHRC for the AY 2021-2022
  • Reem Alghamdi and Dr. Reem Alotaibi awarded the best poster presentation in the Annual Resident Research Day at KFSHRC for the AY 2021-2022
