American Society of Health-System Pharmacists

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) is a professional organization representing the interests of pharmacists who practice in hospitals, health maintenance organizations, long-term care facilities, home care, and other components of health care.

ASHP sets the standards for accrediting pharmacy post graduate resident programs including Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency Programs and Postgraduate Year Two (PGY2) Pharmacy Residency Programs.

The purpose of Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency Program is to graduate highly skilled and knowledgeable advanced pharmacy practitioners to assume direct patient care positions according to the best practice and international standards.  While the purpose of Postgraduate Year Two (PGY2) Pharmacy Residency Programs is to graduate highly skilled and knowledgeable advanced pharmacy practitioners to assume direct patient care positions in certain pharmacotherapy specialties according to the best practice and international standards.

The Pharmaceutical Care Division-Riyadh received the first ASHP accreditation outside the United States in 2011 for its PGY-1 program.  In addition, KFSHRC-Riyadh is currently the only hospital with PGY-2 accreditation outside the US for its residency program in solid organ transplant specialty.
