The KFSH&RC-Jeddah Mega Expansion Project

The KFSH&RC-J Mega Expansion Project was originally conceived as a fundamental enlargement of the Rawdah Campus which entailed Complete Utility Restructuring, Land Acquisition, Agency Interaction and Development of a long term plan.  Public Tendering for the Phase 1 Expansion at the Rawdah Campus proceeded with the selection of the Saudi Binladin Group to carry out the first phase of this development.  Through the Generosity of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, KFSH&RC (Gen. Org.) was granted the opportunity to develop and expand the Mega Project on approximately 2,000,000 square meters of land north of the King Abdul Aziz International Airport.  This opportunity allowed for the expansion of services of KFSH&RC-J as well as the potential to house Medical Staff and their Families within a defined Medical Community.  A significant benefit to KFSH&RC is the ability to Master Plan a community of Specialist Hospitals exceeding 2000 Inpatient Beds with the Phase 1 Medical Centre Development addressing approximately 851 of those Inpatient Beds.

The Medical City project of the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre comprises a complete set of medical, administrative, technical, logistic and housing services. The Medical City of the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre-Jeddah is being constructed with a building area totaling 525.000 square meters comprising the following:

  • Main Cardiology, Neurosurgery, Surgery and Internal Medicine departments.
  • Advanced Oncology Centre for adults and children.
  • New separate Pediatric Centre of 286 Beds
  • 373 Outpatient Clinics and 90 Bed DPU.
  • Research and Innovation Centre
  • Academic and Training Centre.
  • Main Administrative Building.
  • Contracted Services Building.
  • Infrastructure and Integrated Logistics Center
  • 3 Kilometer Service Tunnel connecting all Medical Centres to the Service Zone.

This Mega Project includes 1681 medical spaces distributed as follows:

  • 851 beds for Inpatients.
  • 457 Day Beds.
  • 373 Exam and Treatment Rooms for all specialties and sub-specialties.

Furthermore, 10 Endoscopy units, 8 DPU operating rooms, 50 Renal Dialysis units for outpatients, 34 units to inpatients and 5 units for pediatric patients will be made available. Spaces for hospital Support Services (operation & maintenance, food services, housekeeping, transportation, etc.) and Central Plants for water & sewer treatment, power substation & generators and chilled water plant along with IT/Communication network will also be provided. In addition, shaded parking area that can accommodate 5000 cars has been designed.

Upon completion of this Legacy Project in Jeddah, the promise of World Class Specialist Healthcare will be significantly advanced in the Western Region but will also stand as a platform from which KFSH&RC (Gen Org) will impact the Health and Wellbeing throughout the Middle East.  The Master plan envisions additional Specialist Healthcare Centres of Excellence for the emerging needs of the Kingdom.

It is worth noting that the KFSH&RC-J, in its current limited resources, is considered the only Hospital that provides Tumor management and BMT in the Western Region. KFSH&RC’s capacity to provide these services will increase with the completion of the Mega Project.  In addition, cardiovascular surgeries will also increase to at least three times its current levels.

The massive new structure can clearly be viewed from Madina or Haramain Roads. Manpower and machinery are working towards completion in 2021.  The project, undoubtedly, is set to be a remarkable milestone for both KFSH&RC (Gen Org) and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
