The KFSH&RC-Jeddah Mega Expansion Project

The KFSH&RC-J Mega Expansion Project was originally conceived as a fundamental enlargement of the Rawdah Campus which entailed Complete Utility Restructuring, Land Acquisition, Agency Interaction and development of a long term plan.  Public Tendering for the Phase 1 Expansion at the Rawdah Campus proceeded with the selection of the Saudi Binladin Group to carry out the first phase of this development.  Through the Generosity of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, KFSH&RC (Gen. Org.) was granted the opportunity to develop and expand the Mega Project on approximately 2,000,000 square meters of land.  This opportunity allowed for the expansion of services of KFSH&RC-J as well as the potential to house Medical Staff and their Families within a defined Medical Community.  A significant benefit to KFSH&RC is the ability to Master Plan a community of Specialist Hospitals approximating 2000 beds with the Phase 1 Medical Centre Development addressing approximately 1080 of those Beds .

The Medical City project of the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center comprises a complete set of medical, administrative, technical, logistic and housing services. The Medical City of the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center- Jeddah is being constructed on a building area totaling 500.000 square meters comprising the following:

  • Main Cardiology, Neurosurgery, General Surgery and Medical Departments.
  • Advanced Oncology Center for adults and children.
  • New separate pediatric center.
  • Outpatient clinics and DPU.
  • Research, academic and training center.
  • Main administrative building.
  • Support Services building.
  • Conference Center.
  • Infrastructure and integrated logistics.
  • 2 Kilometer long tunnel crossing and serving all centers.

The Specialist Medical City also includes 1079 bed spaces distributed as follows:

  • 679 beds for inpatients.
  • 400 beds for DPU.
  • 360 beds for outpatients.

Furthermore, 10 Endoscopy units, 12 DPU rooms, 50 Renal Dialysis units to outpatients, 32 units to inpatients and 5 units to pediatric patients will be made available. The project will also include delivery suits, family medicine center, dental clinic, VIP clinic and protocol offices, and offices for bio-medical, maintenance, operation, housekeeping, security and food services. Complete power network, water desalination plant dedicated for drinking and irrigation purposes along with IT/Communication network will also be provided. In addition, shaded parking area that can accommodate 5100 cars has been designed. Upon timely completion of this prestigious edifice in Jeddah, the concept of specialist health treatment will be envisaged and promoted and the new Hospital will consequently be capable of increasing its capacity to 1079 inpatient beds compared to previous capacity of 500 beds. This will consequently be reflected on the new Hospital outpatient clinics activity where number of attending patients will be doubled compared to its current level reaching 3,16,730 patients seen until end of 2015.

The new Specialist Hospital will have 50 units for outpatient renal dialysis, 32 units for inpatients renal dialysis and 5 units for renal dialysis of pediatric patients compared to the previous Hospital allocation of 6 beds for transplantation surgeries. Tumor management and BMT procedures will also increase upon completion of the new project. It is worth noting that the Specialist Hospital, in its current limited resources, is considered the only Hospital that provides this sort of procedures in the western region. In addition, cardiovascular surgeries will also increase in the new Hospital from 362 to at least three times the number.

The new project milestones are evidently emerging and its multi-floor towers are rising, which can clearly be viewed when one passes by Madina or Al-Haramen Roads. Manpower and machinery are working towards completion and are racing against time to achieve the project on time. The project, undoubtedly, is set to be a remarkable milestone, distinguishing the era of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin AbdulAziz and his wise government.
