Program Overview:

The General Surgery Residency Training Program is a structured five-year training program that is accredited by Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS).  It aims to equip prospective trainees with an understanding of the fundamentals of General Surgery, competence in surgical diagnostics and therapeutics, and safe patient care. Training takes place in King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSH&RC), one of the largest health-care institutions in the Kingdom.

Welcome Message

Welcome to the Department of Surgery, General Surgery Residency Training Program!

Our General Surgery program aims to provide high quality training for prospective trainees from all over the Kingdom. By providing a balanced environment of bedside teaching and hands-on training, residents become familiar in the assessment and management of surgical patients. The General Surgery program emphasizes the values of teamwork, commitment and patient-centered care.

Training Structure

Residents are expected to rotate amongst five subspecialty services: General & Oncology Surgery, Colon & Rectal Surgery, Breast & Endocrine Surgery, Surgical Oncology and Hepatobiliary Surgery. KFSH&RC offers a wide range of clinical cases that vary in complexity in which junior and senior level residents are given the opportunity to implement foundational and advanced surgical practice. Trainees are directly involved in patient care, encouraged to ask questions and provided adequate supervision. Residents are encouraged to engage in research, quality improvement projects and patient advocacy.

Educational Activities

  • Thursday Half-Day Academic Activity (12:00 – 2:00 p.m.):

It is a weekly session that involves the scientific discussion of a general surgery topic. Residents are required to give a presentation on a previously selected topic and engage in evidence-based discussion. Presentations are supervised by senior staff physicians.

  • Thursday Journal Club (2:00 – 4:00 p.m.):

Residents present updated literature reviews on surgical articles in which the literature is critiqued and evaluated.

  • Simulation Center:

The simulation center has highly advanced surgical simulators that realistically mimic cases encountered in the operating room. Trainees are able to improve surgical technique, operative safety and intraoperative decision making. Sessions are booked in advance and given with the supervision of senior staff.
