Microsurgery Hands-On Course

Comparative Medicine Building- King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre

The microsurgical laboratory in King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre was established by Dr. Eider Siquera in 1986. It has been specifically designed for training in microsurgery. Numerous surgeons have completed the course with different backgrounds in Neurosurgery, ENT, Plastic Surgery, Ophthalmology, Vascular Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, General Surgery, Urology and Gynecology. Basic surgical training is required to be able to perform in this course. Research assistants and veterinarians are also included in the training for microsurgical techniques. The aim of this course is to guide the trainee through a series of exercises to achieve eye-to-hand coordination and economy of motion under the microscope.

Microvascular techniques are used on the aorta of anesthetized rats since they are excellent models for this training, for many reasons. The diameter of the rat aorta ranges from 1.5-2.5mm; this represents the smallest vessel diameter that could be operated on clinically. It is very easy to test the results of the surgical maneuvers, and ultimately the end result of the microvascular anastamosis. The rat is inexpensive to obtain and to maintain, and it is easy to breed.

As of present, Dr. Essam Al-Shail is the course director and he is also one of the mentors of the workshop. He aims that microsurgery will be an integral part of a surgeon’s training in various fields and specialties.

The microsurgery laboratory is located in the Comparative Medicine Building. The laboratory has state-of-the-art Leica microscopes, teaching cameras and complete audiovisual system.

In addition, the conference room which accommodates up to twenty four (24) people is connected to the microsurgery laboratory through a high resolution audiovisual system. The lab offers dry and wet sessions including end to end anastomosis and other microvascular anastomosis using the rat model.

Qualified veterinary anesthetist and surgeon, technicians and nurses provide proper anesthesia and animal handling protocols according to national and international guidelines.

Microsurgery Arabia held Intensive Microsurgery Hands-On Courses four (4) times a year. The course involves 5 days (Sunday to Thursday) of intensive microsurgery training including the use of surgical microscope, micro-instruments, micro-suture and live animal models.

This course is offered to residents, fellows, practicing physicians, veterinarians and other allied medical professionals who would like to obtain the basic knowledge and fundamental skills of microvascular surgery.

The microsurgical techniques are essential tools for many surgical specialties and sub-specialties including Neurosurgery, ENT, Ophthalmology, Plastic Surgery, General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Urology, etc.

In this course, the participants will learn the required skills to perform microsurgery including:

  • Eye-to-hand coordination
  • How to handle delicate surgical tools
  • Acquiring economy of motion under microscope
  • Training on microsurgical procedures

At the end of the course, participants will be capable of performing vessel dissection, varying microsurgical techniques, arterial end-to-end anastomosis and end-to-side anastomosis.

Certificate of attendance will be provided with 20 CME hours as approved by the Saudi Council for Health Specialties. Essam Al Shail, MD, Associate Professor, Al-Faisal University and Deputy Chairman, Department of Neurosciences will be the course director and counselor for this program.

Please note that one of the major requirements for this course is that the participant should have basic surgical background.
