The Bone Bank at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Riyadh performed 436 bone transplants in 2017, with an increase of 33.33% compared to 2016, making the total number of bone transplants 1295 since the launch of the Bone Bank 7 years ago.

Dr. Zayed Al Zayed, Consultant and Chairman of Orthopedic Surgery Department, explained that the Bone Bank, which is the only one of its kind in the region, was able to obtain bones from 107 donors in 2017. The bank’s stock reached 1811 bone units in 2017, which included various bones and tendons, removed from brain death donors in the past years.

He added that the patients who benefited from the bank stock of bones and tendons were aging between 20 and 70 years, male and female. Over the last year, the surgical operations included spinal correction (scoliosis), pelvic joint fusion, bone tumors surgeries, as well as sports surgeries such as cruciate ligament. Dr. Al Zayed pointed out that all patients were in good health and they regained their functional status significantly within 3 months postoperatively.

Dr. Al Zayed indicated that activating bone donation programs and raising awareness of its importance among the medical community, led to the availability of abundant donors. Therefore, the Bone Bank at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre has reached self-sufficiency as it provides bone units to a number of local hospitals with the appropriate and safe transport facilities.
