Welcome Message

Welcome to the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Training Program of King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre!

KFSHRC is one the best tertiary care centers that offers you a unique opportunity to learn from some of the most complex cases in the Middle East. I, Dr. Maisoon AlMugbel, am the residency-training program director, and Dr. Wesam Kurdi is the chairwoman of our department.

Our 5-year program is devoted to building resident autonomy and a sense of patient advocacy in a supportive environment coupled with research, volunteering, and advanced learning skills with top-tier leadership in quality and patient safety.

Our mission is to provide excellent clinical care, conduct research, and educate future leaders of maternal-fetal medicine, gynecology oncology, urogynecology, and reproductive endocrinology and infertility.

We wish you all the best.

Training Structure

Our program is a 5-year training program, as accredited by the Saudi Commision for Health Specialities (SCFHS), and commences on the 1st of October each year.

Residents are each entitled to 4 weeks of annual leaves which are scheduled and organized in advance with the respective chief resident and program director.

In your first year, you will remain in-house; it will exclusively be labor and delivery, whereby you are expected to learn and experience the basics of labor and delivery, and inpatient and outpatient obstetric care.

From second year onwards, each resident is to have completed the following:

  • General obstetrics
  • General gynecology
  • Maternal-Fetal Medicine (8 weeks)
  • Ultrasound (6 weeks)
  • Gynecology Oncology (12 weeks)
  • Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (8 weeks)
  • Urogynecology (8 weeks)
  • Research (6 weeks)
  • ICU (4 weeks)
  • Neonatal ICU (4 weeks)
  • Anesthesiology (4 weeks)

Residents have the option to complete outside rotations in other general hospitals.

Educational Activities

Mandatory attendance is expected during weekly morning activities every Tuesday, and academic lecture-days every Thursday afternoon. For residents rotating in gynecology oncology, this includes weekly tumor-board discussions every Monday, and daily morning meetings. For those rotating in maternal-fetal medicine and general obstetrics/gynecology, this includes weekly Wednesday sessions.

Moreover, all residents are mandated to attend monthly visits to KFSHRC’s simulation center for hands-on training in various OSCE skills, ranging from basic amniotomy, delivery and cesarean sections, to laparoscopy/hysteroscopy.

Annual visits to the institute’s own animal laboratory are also arranged and residents are highly encouraged to attend the sessions.

Mandatory sessions are reserved exclusively for residents through ‘protected time’, whereby the residents’ duties are temporarily placed on hold, the more important duties being taken over by fellows and attending consultants.

Other non-official but highly recommended activities include daily gynecology oncology discussions and daily reproductive endocrinology and infertility sessions. There are also websites and courses being sponsored by the academic and training affairs from time to time that residents are encouraged to take advantage of.

Consultants and fellows are available at all times and welcome keen learners with open arms.

Volunteering
We strive to advocate for our patients and help raise awareness and patient education by having weekly booths for multiple specialties, including obstetrics and gynecology. Residents are encouraged to apply through respective representatives of our hospital’s academic and training affairs.

We also recruit senior residents to travel abroad with the gynecology oncology team to join hands with healthcare workers in underdeveloped countries around the world. Last year, the team had traveled to Nigeria to offer their help in villages and towns that needed it the most.

Moreover, we try our best to grasp opportunities such as the international women’s day, Mother’s Day, and the National women physician’s day each year.

Some of the remarkable volunteering done by our current residents for international women’s day 2023 can be seen below!

Research Activities

As mandated by the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties, residents are to submit a full research article in accredited journals by the end of their programs.

We facilitate this by providing adequate mentorship and guidance through Dr. Ahmed Nazer, head of the research committee of obstetrics and gynecology, who is actively seeking residents to complete/start research projects. All of the department's consultants are also available and welcome keen residents with open arms.

Our Residents

We take pride in our residents and their achievements and conduct annual award ceremonies to acknowledge some of our most hard-working physicians. Our residents are not only hard-working but great team-players, supporting and lifting one another with a unified goal.
