Introduction:

The Social Services Department at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) provides services to support patients in dealing with economic and social conditions that can negatively impact their treatment. Therefore, the social worker plays an active role in cooperation with the medical team in the hospital. This training program is designed for interns who graduated from Social Work Bachelor’s degree programs. The interns will be acquainted with the hospital's mission, values, and the importance of teamwork. They will be informed about the role of the social worker and the services provided to patients by the Social Services Department. Continuous supervision and follow-up are maintained between the Social Services Department and the intern’s supervisor.

  

Objectives:

Social Work interns will rotate in outpatient and inpatient areas and be supervised by assigned Social Workers. They will be able to provide the following services for patients during the internship under the supervision of an assigned Social Worker:
• Helping patients overcome social difficulties and supporting their families during the treatment process by identifying and assessing their social challenges.
• Providing financial aid or referral to charities in Riyadh, based on the assessment.
• Providing guidance and social support to patients and their families, as well as helping them overcome fear and anxiety.
• Working closely with the medical team regarding social and environmental information about the patient and their family.
• Identifying patients who suffer from incurable diseases and providing them free air tickets for better treatment as per the regulations of the Ministry of Health.
• Providing temporary housing facilities to patients who undergo transplant procedures at KFSHRC, or patients who receive chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and other therapies in outpatient clinics. Alternatively, introducing patients and their attendants to charities that offer housing services.

 

Duration:

• Two (2) academic semesters

 

Acceptance Criteria:

• Internship request letter from intern’s sponsor
• Saudi national or born to a Saudi mother 
• A GPA of 4 out of 5 and above
• Pass the KFSHRC English Placement Test
• Pass the interview
