Overview

Oversighting investigational therapeutics from discovery to real‑world evidence generation. Harmonizing the clinical trials ecosystem and strengthening clinical research infrastructure. Anchoring KFSHRC with research entities and global industry partners to accelerate our patients access to breakthrough innovations.

Serves as an essential driver of the hospital’s clinical research mission. The Department oversight investigational therapeutics across the full research continuum; from discovery and translational science to clinical trials and real-world evidence generation. In parallel, ITD establishes and manages high-impact partnerships with industry sponsors, Contract Research Organizations (CROs), academic institutions, and regulatory authorities; positioning KFSHRC as a preferred site for complex clinical trials and translational research. The Department acts as a collaborative anchor within KFSHRC; uniting Centers of Excellence with external research entities and pharmaceutical and biotechnology partners.

By aligning regulatory, operational, and digital frameworks, ITD enhances institutional readiness, supports investigators and coordinators through structured training programs and streamlined pathways, and expands the hospital’s clinical trials portfolio.

Through privileged access to confidential industry portfolios, ITD expedites the access to innovative therapies and technologies to our patients and reinforces KFSHRC’s standing as a national leader in clinical research and innovation in alignment with the Vision 2030 and the National Biotechnology Strategy 2040.

Industry, CRO, and Public-Private Partnerships

Serves as a gateway for strategic clinical research partnerships, fostering collaborations with pharmaceutical companies, CROs, and external research organizations.
1. Managing four high-impact partnership agreements and establishing one agreement annually.
2. Conducting more than 30 high-level global leadership visits to showcase KFSHRC capabilities and position KFSHRC as the main hub for clinical trials in the region.

Training and Education

Establish and lead the SCFHS-accredited KFSHRC Program for Excellence in Clinical Trials with its three tacks:
1. Investigators Program: KFSHRC Clinical Investigator Development Program (CIDP).
2. Foundations of Effective Trial Coordination: The Study Coordinator Professional Program.
3. Operational Excellence: The Clinical Trials Unit Leadership Program.

Cost-Contaminate Initiatives

Leading a hospital-wide cost‑savings initiative through quantifying the direct financial impact of clinical trials, specifically the cost avoided when trial participants receive industry‑sponsored investigational therapies that the institution would otherwise fund.

Technology and Digital Enablement

Support driving digital and operational initiatives that support scalable and efficient research delivery. This includes:
1. The development of patient-facing research platforms, such as Arabic-language patient portals.
2. Oversight digital and AI platforms that attracts sponsored trials through making KFSHRC more visible to biopharmaceutical sponsors; leading to more funded research opportunities.

Engagement, Awareness, and Knowledge Exchange

Leads and supports initiatives that strengthen the national clinical research ecosystem and promote research awareness. These include:
