About her

Born in Taipei and raised in Singapore and New York, Prof. Jackie Y. Ying graduated with B.E. summa cum laude in Chemical Engineering from The Cooper Union in 1987. She received her PhD in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University in 1991 with an AT&T Bell Laboratories Ph.D. Scholarship. She pursued research in nanocrystalline materials with Prof. Herbert Gleiter at the Institute for New Materials, Saarbrücken, Germany as NSF-NATO Post-doctoral Fellow and Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow.

Career

Prof. Ying joined the Chemical Engineering faculty at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1992, and became its youngest Full Professor at the age of 35 in 2001.

She was the Executive Director of the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN) and Director of NanoBio Lab at Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), Singapore (2003-2023).

She is the Chief Innovation and Research Officer and Executive Director of Research Center at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSHRC), Saudi Arabia.

Prof. Ying’s mission is to lead translational research at KFSHRC to create novel therapeutics, diagnostics and medical technologies that will offer early, accurate detection as well as effective and affordable treatment of complex diseases. The goal is to integrate biomarkers discovery, multi-omics, bioinformatics and artificial intelligence, design and development of targeted therapies and diagnostics, animal studies, and clinical trials within KFSHRC to translate science and technology into clinical breakthroughs.

An important part of our mission is to nurture young talents in biomedical sciences and engineering, and to spinoff and incubate new technological platforms. We actively collaborate with universities and national agencies and laboratories to advance multidisciplinary research initiatives. We also seek to develop strategic partnerships with pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and medical technology companies to advance healthcare regionally and globally.
