Clinical Radiology Department Internship

 Introduction:

Radiology is the science that deals with the use of radiation for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes in medicine. Radiologic technologists, or radiographers, are the terms applied to individuals qualified to use radiation sources to produce images of the parts of the body for interpretation by a physician known as a radiologist.
Radiology Department includes the following sections: General Radiography (X-ray), Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Ultrasonography (US), Nuclear Medicine (NM), Positron Emission Tomography ( PET ) and Interventional Radiology (Angiography and Fluoroscopy). In King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center (KFHS&RC), Radiology Department provides the interns with the opportunity to integrate academic knowledge along with the clinical practice using a detailed program for every section.
For one (1) year rotation, General, the internship program will include all sections: General Radiography (X-ray), Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Ultrasonography (US), Nuclear Medicine (NM), Positron Emission Tomography ( PET ) and Interventional Radiology (Angiography and Fluoroscopy).
For one (1) year rotation, Diagnostic, the internship will include:  General Radiography (X-ray), Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Interventional Radiology (Angiography and Fluoroscopy).
For one (1) year rotation, Nuclear Medicine specialty, the internship will include: Nuclear Medicine (NM) and Positron Emission Tomography ( PET )
For one (1) year rotation, Interventional radiology specialty, the internship will include: General Radiography (X-ray), and Interventional Radiology (Angiography and Fluoroscopy).
For six (6) months rotation, Ultrasound specialization, the internship will include: General and Vascular Ultrasound.

 

Objectives:

  • Read request form, receive patient, chick patient ID, and preparation
  • Introduce themselves and explain the procedure to the patient, take consent form if needed, prepare the room, equipment, accessories and supplies.
  • Select the proper technique, position the patient for the requested examination, give appropriate instructions to patient select appropriate technical parameters, radiation protection and take diagnostic images. (Under supervision)
  • Process the image, critique the image for acceptability or rejection with radiologic technologist
  • Inform the patient that the examination is finished and tell about after care if needed and the collection of
  • Upload the images to the system and maintains the record of the procedures.
  • Record details of examination in the clinical logbook and are initialed by the supervising technologist. (For some universities)

 

Duration:

One (1) year (General, Diagnostic, and Nuclear Medicine) 
Six (6) months (Ultrasound)

 

Acceptance Criteria:

  • Internship request letter from Intern’s sponsor
  • Saudi national or borne from Saudi mother only
  • GPA 3 out of 5 and above, or equivalent
  • Pass KFSH&RC English Placement Test (Achieving level 5), or STEP above 80
  • Pass the interview
