Overview

Dr. Mohammed Hussain Alqahtani is Senior Scientist whose research is focused on helping Saudi Arabia become self-sufficient in its radiopharmaceutical needs, and thereby improving patient care. Working with a dedicated team, they have produced over 120 peer-reviewed publications, abstracts and technical reports over the past three decades, and registered one patent.

Dr. Alqahtani served as an Editorial Board member and reviewer for numerous journals, and is the recipient of several grants for his ongoing research.

Dr. Alqahtani is responsible for enhancing the department's technology transfer program by producing PET and/or SPECT radiotracers for clinical use under a GMP-compliant manufacturing process. He leads new research and development programs aimed at improving labelling procedures and automating existing radiosynthesis pathways, and fosters collaborations with local and global institutions and companies. He is a committed mentor to scientific staff in identifying new chemical and biological precursors for specific biological targets, and establishing the process of translating lab findings to clinical applications.

Career Background

Dr. Alqahtani has over 34 years of experience in radiopharmaceuticals research and radiopharmaceutical manufacturing. He obtained a PhD in Radiochemistry with a focus on Radiopharmaceutical Chemistry in 2000 from the University of Surrey, Guildford, UK. He spent two years at the Radiological Sciences Department of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO, USA, working under the late Professor Michael J. Welch as a Research Associate and full-time faculty member from (2000-2002). Dr Alqahtani has led multiple research and clinical support projects and is actively involved as a consultant with several national institutions and international organizations in the field. He was lately appointed as a Member-at-Large in the World Council on Isotopes (WCI) Executive Committee (2026-2029).
