Overview

Dr. Rafat Mohtasib is a Senior Medical Physicist and Scientist/Head of Molecular and Functional Imaging at KFSHRC, where he has led clinical and translational imaging research since 2012. He holds a PhD in Medical Imaging from the University of Liverpool (UK) and a BSc in Diagnostic Medical Sonography from George Washington University (USA), graduating Summa Cum Laude. A registered RDMS and RVT since 2000, Dr. Mohtasib directs the Radiological & Imaging Sciences Master’s Program at Alfaisal University and chairs the Scientific Council for Radiological Sciences and Medical Technology at the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties. His research spans functional and structural MRI neuroimaging, Alzheimer’s disease biomarkers, autism spectrum disorder, calibrated fMRI, and diagnostic ultrasound, with over 18 peer-reviewed publications and more than SAR 7 million in secured research funding.

Career Background

Dr. Mohtasib began his career at KFSHRC as Senior Ultrasound Technologist and Vascular Lab Leader (2000–2008). He completed his MPhil and PhD in Medical Imaging at the University of Liverpool, UK (2008–2012), followed by a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Molecular and Functional Imaging at KFSH&RC (2012–2014). Since 2012, he has served as Scientist and Head of Molecular and Functional Imaging at KFSHRC, and since 2013 as Director of the Radiological & Imaging Sciences Master’s Program at Alfaisal University.

He has held consultancy roles at Princess Nourah Bint Abdulrahman University (2013–present) and Prince Sattam Bin Abdulaziz University (2014–2016), and served as Acting Director of the Centre for Autism Research at KFSH&RC (2014–2018). He is a founding member of the Saudi Commission’s Scientific Council for Radiological Sciences and chairs it (2022-2024).
