2020

 

  • Different platforms were established; these include transmission precautions and infection control, laboratory testing (both commercial and in-house tests), in-patient capacity of floors and intensive care, supplies and equipment, and the clinical care of COVID-19 patients.. The COVID-19 Command and Control Center (COVID-19 CCC) was established early in the pandemic (Main Hospital-Riyadh and Jeddah Branch) to serve as a governance and executive body for planning and management of all COVID 19 related issues. It consists of the above platforms and added support divisions and departments, with representation from all KFSH&RC sites. The (COVID-19 CCC) meets several times a week (daily, whenever necessary) to oversee and manage COVID-19 related issues.
  • Healthcare Vision Realization Program - The purpose is to redesign the healthcare sector into an effective and holistic system, enhancing public health awareness and disease prevention, utilizing the latest care models to provide for enhanced access to health services through optimal coverage and equitable geographical distribution.
  • The number of new Stem cell registered donors reached 340 donors. 11 KFSHRC patients benefited from this service after matching their tissues with donor tissue.
  • Successful heart transplantation for an 11-month old baby girl, youngest surviving in the Kingdom and region. And first to receive ABO incompatible.
  • Robotic kidney donation was introduced in 2020 and total of 37 robotic kidney donations have been done.
  • KFSH&RC established the Simulation Center with the goal of improving skills and training quality, using cutting-edge technologies. The official inauguration of the Simulation Center was held in October 2020. The Simulation Center is equipped with state-of-the art equipment that help simulate real patient care scenarios in outpatient clinics, in patient rooms, intensive care rooms (ICU), operating rooms (OR), and emergency rooms (ER). During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Simulation Center supported the hospital and covered some of the requirements like testing and evaluation of new COVID-19 operating rooms, COVID-19 research and training. The impact of the center is expected to positively affect patient care, training quality, capacity, and financial sustainability. Simulation Center training activities in 2020.

  • The Scientific Publications Office at KFSH&RC publishes 3 pioneer medical journals which focus on findings in the scientific field with the aim of advancing healthcare awareness, introducing new research in the field of diagnosis and treatment of diseases, especially among medical specialists.

  • In 2020 KFSHRC Granted 3 patents - United States patent was granted on November 2020, Patent number US10,828,062, titled “A surgical apparatus, in particular a navigation probe for localizing and treating lesions in a brain”. 2- United States patent was granted on May 2020, patent number US,10,660,678, titled “Vertebral Fixation Device”. 3- United States patent was granted on February 2020, patent number US10550130B2, titled “Benzo-thiazolo-imidazole compounds and uses thereof”.
  • KFSH&RC was awarded the HealthCare’s Most Wired Hospital Award by the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHiME). This award was created to elevate health and care of communities worldwide by encouraging optimal use of information and communication technology.
  • YESSER – Qiyas Assessment KFSH&RC ranked first among healthcare institutions in the most recent            e-Government Transformation Measurement program and attained an overall result of 84.60 % within the integration stage of Qiyas e-Government transformation report.
  • Sehaty Patient Portal Enhancements Medication Refill- Medical Report Request - Allergy Updates - Under 18 Registration - Flu Teleclinic - COVID-19 Permit - Online Appointments - Push Notification and add to Calendar - Medical Supplies Refill - COVID-19 Back to Work Clearance - Login and Registration through Identity and Access Management - Services Corporation-Government platforms.

  • Saudization and development of nurses Increased the number of Saudi Nurses by 10% compare to last year, therefore, the percentage of Saudi Nurses is 28%.

  • Polyclinics and Family Medicine Building Project This is a state-of-the-art outpatient healthcare project within Riyadh’s heart This is one of the transformation projects and includes the following areas in its development: Men’s and women’s health - Mother and Child Medicine - Dental Clinic - Family Medicine.

  • Private Wing Project This is a five-floor building equipped with cutting-edge technology.
  • Annex Building to the King Abdullah Center for Oncology and Liver Diseases.

2019

 

  • With regard to specialized medical care, we have achieved several improvements. Notable among them are a 14.8% increase in the number of organ transplants compared to last year, in which the total number of transplants reached 1,676 this year (among these were 38 heart transplants, 12 of them were for children, which is the largest number of heart transplants performed since the beginning of the program.) Furthermore, the Kidney Transplant Program remains the the largest single center for paired kidney donations.
  • The total number of KFSH&RC hospital beds increased to (1,934), which is a 4.4% increase compared to last year. Also, the number of heart surgeries (for adults and children) increased by 16.1% compared to last year. Additionally, for the first time in the region, the Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) was repaired with Iliac Aneurysm on both sides using an Internal Branching Device on both sides (IBD) with Internal Vascular Aneurysm (EVAR) repair.

  • In nursing, we made progress in Saudization, by recruiting (280) Saudi nurses in 2019. Quality Management at KFSH&RC supported the Pursue Zero Harm sub-initiative in which 1,055 healthcare services providers were trained in Riyadh and Jeddah to achieve zero harm and become a High Reliability Organization (HRO).
  • The Research Centre obtained 4 patents from North America, Europe and Japan. Additionally, the Research Centre completed the Emerging Radiopharmaceuticals Production for Delivering Precision Medicine subinitiative. Consequently, the new radiopharmaceuticals — Gallium-68 DOTATATE, Gallium-68 PSMA, and Lu177— will be available for diagnostic use.

  • In regard to medical education and training, KFSH&RC offers (151) programs of which; (55) fellowship programs, and (96) programs for specialization, also the number of graduates of specialized programs increased by (20%). KFSH&RC established the Simulation Center with the goal of improving skills and training quality. The Simulation Center is a milestone in using cutting edge technology and will have a tremendous impact on developing practitioners’ skills and providing quality of services to patients.

  • In the field of health information technology development, KFSH&RC achieved the sixth level of analytical maturity from the Health Information Management Systems Association (HIMSS), as the first medical institution outside the United States and within three international medical institutions, to achieve such level.

  • Our achievements in quality are reflected in the acquisition of new international accreditation, as well as the re-accreditation of 6 international ones, bringing the total of international and regional accreditations for this year to 21 accreditations, in the medical and operational fields.

 

2018

 

  • One of the most significant accreditations came from the Accreditation for Cardiovascular Excellence for the Electrophysiology Program. KFSH&RC is the first center outside the USA to be honored with this certification by ACE.
  • The planned development and expansion of outpatient clinics and services have enabled KFSH&RC to increase the number of patients receiving care. During 2018, the number of outpatient visits at our hospital in Riyadh exceeded one million visits for the first time.

  • KFSH&RC has always prided itself on providing high-caliber healthcare to patients throughout the Kingdom with 27 hospitals now participating in the local cooperation services. During 2018, the number of remote Intensive Care Units grew to 41. The number of patients seen in their local areas continues to rise. In 2018, 5,535 patients were monitored through health cooperation offices, marking a rise of 149%. In addition, 1,206 patients from KFSH&RC were monitored through 44 polyclinics and 108 specialist medical clinics in 14 reference hospitals. This represents a rise of 138%. During the year, 279 patients from hospitals of the Ministry of Health were examined, and 968 surgical and medical procedures were performed. The number of consultancy clinics also increased to 438, an increase of 28.1% compared to the previous year.

  • Inauguration The Emergency Building Project was inaugurated with God’s blessing at the beginning the year and consists of 6 floors to serve emergency cases. It occupies an area of 19,000 m2, contains 110 rooms for temporary hospitalization, , and has all the necessary emergency medical services.

  • In the field of digital health, KFSH&RC achieved the sixth level of maturity and analytical capabilities of data from the Health Information Management Systems Society, becoming the first medical institution from outside the USA to achieve this level.

  • The bone bank at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center in Riyadh was able to perform 436 bone transplant operations during the past year 2017, an increase of 33.33% over the previous year 2016, bringing the cumulative total of bone transplant cases in the hospital to 1295 operations since the establishment of the bone bank seven years ago.

 

2017

 

  • Inauguration of the King Abdullah Center for Oncology and Liver Diseases (KACO&LD), a state-of-the-art structure housing 23 floors with 300 beds, 8 advanced operating rooms, 96 chemotherapy rooms, floors for offices and all the required clinical and non-clinical support services.
  • The Heart Centre is the only active heart transplant program in the Kingdom, the largest program in the Asia Pacific region and is now among the top (10%) transplant centers worldwide performing (30) Heart transplantations or more.

  • Renal Transplant Exchange Program at KFSH&RC, Riyadh, has achieved significant progress through non-related living-donors kidney exchange program and was able to perform a total of (44) renal transplant surgeries this year with (69%) increase from last year which represent (25%) from the total Kidney Transplantations performed from living donor in 2017.

  • Over (30000) Donors have joined the Stem Cell Donor Registry of KFSH&RC- Riyadh, which in turn increases the possibility of finding matching donors to patients suffering from serious diseases and is need for stem cell transplant.

  • KFSH&RC Performed (428) Kidney Transplants, the sophisticated innovative techniques used in conducting the Kidney transplantations commensurate with the patient’s underlying health condition.

  • Re-accreditation by Joint Commission International (JCI).
  • Re-accreditation by ISO 17025.
  • Performing six (6) Heart Transplants operations for six Patients, including a Four-year-old Child within 72 Hours in a Rare Occurrence globally of This Kind at a Single Centre .The success of the operations reflects the efficiency of medical, nursing and technical staff of KFSH&RC.

 

 

2016

 

  • The Heart Centre is the only active heart transplant program in the Kingdom, the largest program in the Asia Pacific region and is now in the top transplant centers worldwide performing 20 Heart transplantations or more
  • Renal Transplant Exchange Program at KFSH&RC, Riyadh, has achieved significant progress through non-related living-donors kidney exchange program
  • KFSH&RC has launched the new advanced center for Telemedicine, which equipped with the latest advanced technologies, multiple screens, various telemedicine applications and offer communications with 32 Hospitals at the same time to ensure the best possible tertiary services offered to patients in their areas
  • Over 18,000 Donors have joined the Stem Cell Donor Registry of KFSH&RC - Riyadh
  • KFSH&RC Completes 110 Lung Transplants to 110 Patients, the sophisticated, innovative techniques used in conducting the lung transplantations commensurate with the patient’s underlying health condition have enabled the hospital to reach 110 lung transplants by the end of 2016.
  • KFSH&RC Launches a programme for Children Patients’ Education in Cooperation with The Ministry of Education for long-stay inpatient children. This comes as a step towards supporting student patients to avoid any interruption to their studies and to help them prepare for their exams at various education stages.
  • KFSH&RC Inaugurated the newly renovated Orthotics & Prosthetics Department and launches new technologies with computer aided equipment that allows digitally precise manufacturing of devices that will be of great benefit to patients.
  • Re accreditation by College of American Pathologists (CAP), American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), American Society of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI), Joint Accreditation Committee for ISCT-EBMT (JACIE), and ISO 17025.

 

2015

  • The Heart Centre is the only active heart transplant program in the Kingdom, the largest program in the Asia Pacific region, and it is now in the top 10% of transplant centers worldwide as it performes 30 Heart transplantations or more.
  • A total of seven patients were successfully transplanted through the “Paired Kidney donation program” where four cases of transplantation was done between two families with unmatched Donor/Patient “Two way exchange” and three cases of transplantation were done between three families “Three way exchange”
  • KFSH&RC is the first and the only site outside the USA to receive accreditation by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) for the Postgraduate (year-two) Solid Organ Transplant Pharmacy residency program.
  • Twenty (20) lung transplants performed in 2015 with significant increase of 100% over 2014.
  • KFSHRC was chosen as the “First national coding educational program” in the Kingdom By Saudi Health Council.
  • Live transmission of 2 unique interventional cases to a major international symposium “Pediatric and Adult Interventional Cardiology Symposium - PICS-AICS” in Las Vegas USA - a complex pulmonary valve insertion and a percutaneous Fontan procedure using 3D modelling technology.
  • Accredited for the “Pain Management Fellowship Training Program” by the Saudi Health Council.
  • Accredited as a “Residency Training Center in Ophthalmology” by the Saudi Health Council.
  • Health Outreach Services award as an institutional member of the American Telemedicine Association.
  • First center for training and credentialing of Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO) in Middle East.
  • KFSH&RC was the first to successfully demonstrate the concept of the virtual clinic as a new state of the art technology to be utilized by KFSH&RC consultants which offers a high quality of health care to the patients in their regions.

 

2014

 

  • Recognition of the Heart Transplant Center by the International Society for Heart & Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) as a Heart Transplant and Assist Device Center.
  • Among the top 22% of transplant centers worldwide performing Heart transplantation.
  • Performed the first live transmission of Pediatric Cardiac Catheterization with stent and valve insertion to the Pediatric and Adult Interventional Cardiac Symposium in Chicago June 8, 2014.
  • Installed the Heart Navigator System for structural heart disease.
  • Ranked one of the top 10 largest international transplant programs in the number and type of transplanted diseases and the top 4% of all centers reporting to the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR)
  • 1st in the volume of living donor liver transplant amongst 137 liver transplant centers in the USA
  • 1st in the volume of pediatric liver transplant amongst 54 liver transplant centers in the USA
  • 1st in the volume of pediatric living donor kidney transplant amongst 235 kidney transplant centers in the USA

  • Installed the Operating Room Brain Suite thereby allowing for more precise treatment of complicated tumors in sensitive areas of the brain
  • Introduced the concept of ‘awake craniotomies’ for certain neurosurgical procedure enabling the neurosurgeons to do more radical tumor resections
  • Implemented the Intra-Operative Photon Radiation Therapy program in the surgical setting for Breast Cancer patients.
  • Established the first Genetic Counseling Master’s Program in the Middle East.

  • Launched the Advance Medical Alliance Program, which is a joint commercial operation between KFSH&RC and Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Humanitarian City (SBAHC).
  • The Safety Reporting System was implemented.

  • Introduced the DAISY Recognition Program for all Nursing Staff.
  • The King Abdullah Center for Cancer and Liver Diseases began its design and development stage.
  • The design work for the National Biotechnology Center has been completed.

2009

 

  • State-of-the-art technologies namely Tomotherapy, Cyberknife and Rapid Arc were introduced in KFSH&RC, the first in the whole region.
  • The Percutaneous Aortic Valve Implantation Program was introduced.
  • Obtained membership with the US National Database Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI), allowing international benchmarking by 2010.
  • Full, stand-alone implementation of the Oracle HRMS (Human Resources Management System).
  • Established a joint agreement with the Methodist International Hospital in Houston, Texas for quality improvement projects.

 

 2008

 

  • Council of Ministers issued a Royal Order for the amalgamation of King Faisal Specialist Hospital-Jeddah with King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre-Riyadh in May 2008.
  • Clinical Services was successfully re-accredited by the Joint Commission International Accreditation during the on-site survey in March 2008.
  • Inaugural publication of the KFSH&RC Hematology/Oncology and Stem Cell Therapy Journal in January 2008.
  • KFCC awarded membership in the Canadian Bone Marrow Transplantation Group (CBMTG).
  • KFCC achieved institutional membership and collaborative studies with the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG), American College of Radiology Imaging Network (ACRIN).
  • KFCC established the Eastern Mediterranean Blood & Marrow Transplantation Group (EMBMT).
  • Established the first National Bone Bank that will serve the Ministry of Health and other hospitals.
  • Founding and developing the Fetal Diagnosis and Therapy Program, which began February 2008.

 

 2007

 

  • KFCC opened four disease specific database/registries for rectal cancer, Hodgkin’s, Non-Hodgkin’ s and lymphoma and five clinical protocols established in epithelial ovarian cancer, breast cancer, renal cell carcinoma, and myeloid leukemia.
  • KFCC launched the Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) Program.
  • KFHI’s Heart Transplant Program performed 12 heart transplants in 2007 with no deaths. The number of heart transplants performed in the last two years and heart transplant outcome results have become the most positive continuing story in the Kingdom about the programs offered at KFHI.
  • KFHI continued to perform the most complicated and repeat congenital heart surgeries in the Middle East making it one of the top 10 congenital heart centers in the world.
  • Medical Genetics’ Targeted Genetic Disease Prevention Program (TGDPP) – the first targeted prevention program to be launched in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
  • Establishment of the Cardiovascular Genetics Program – the first program to address genetics of cardiovascular diseases.
  • The section of Neurosurgery was recognized by the World Federation of Neurosurgery as a training center for Interventional Skull Base Surgery.
  • The section of Pediatric Neurology established the ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders) National Program in collaboration with CHADD (Child & Adult with ADHD).
  • Established the Autism Program.
  • Development of the Epilepsy Registry to a national registry.
  • The Department of Orthopedic Surgery established the first Bone Bank in the Kingdom to replace resected bones following oncology surgery.

2005

 

PATIENT SAFETY

  • Implemented the Anesthesia PYXIS machine in the Operating Room. It streamlines management of medications and supplies for anesthesia, and securely stores anesthesia products
  • at the point of care.
  • Number of reported medication dispensing errors reduced by 35%.
  • Participated in 100,000 Lives Campaign, which includes the following projects: Rapid Response Team, which resulted in a 54% decrease in codes.

QUALITY OF CARE

  • Implemented CBAY-FLO, a web-based transcription product. This has expedited the completion of patients’ medical records, making critical information available in a timely fashion.
  • Expanded installation of Q-Matic Calling System in the clinics which resulted in increased patient satisfaction.
  • Created a one-stop-shopping for patients in clinics.
  • Expanded the SMS appointment reminder system.

ACCESS

  • Through the Health Outreach Services, 2,058 KFSH&RC patients were seen and 358 laparoscopic and other surgical procedures were performed in the region.
  • Four-hundred thirty-four organ transplantations were performed.

EDUCATION

  • Accreditation of all Nursing activities by the American Academy of Continuing Medical Education.
  • Signing of an agreement for educational affiliation and cooperation with Al Faisal University Medical College.

 

2004

 

  • Establishment of Breast Cancer Program.
  • KFSH&RC won the Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashed Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences in the category of "Best Medical Services in the Arab World".
  • Establishment of Adult Alternate Donor Stem Cell Transplantation Program.
  • The Life Support Training Center was designated by the Saudi Heart Association/American Heart Association as the International Training Organization for Pediatric Advanced Life Support Course in the region.
  • The Annals of Saudi Medicine was approved for inclusion in Index Medicus; therefore, articles published in the Annals now appear in PubMed, the internet interface for Index Medicus.
  • The American Academy of Continuing Medical Education granted KFSH&RC full accreditation with commendation due to its exemplary compliance as a CME provider for all healthcare professionals (for the period October 1, 2004 to September 30, 2005).

  • Endoscopic Ultrasound Service (EUS) was developed.
  • Establishment of Department of Medical Genetics.
  • Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment Clinic was initiated.
  • Establishment of Comprehensive Move-ment Disorders Program (CMDP) with a facility for stereotactic surgery for Parkinson’s Disease.

  • Department of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology was established.
  • KFSH&RC awarded full accreditation by the Joint Commission International Accreditation (JCIA) for three years.
  • King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre-Jeddah opened.

  • Cath and echo labs were upgraded and digitalized. A departmental server was installed and the department became networked.       
  • Upgrading of radiation equipment with a new state-of-the-art Varian 2300 EX accelerator, a CT simulator, two Selectron machines for treatment with radioactive sources.         
  • National Telemedicine Network with telera-diology in specific regions in the Kingdom.    
  • Endoanal ultrasound established for evaluation and staging of patients with renal cancer.

  • Establishment of the Telemedicine Program – a first in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
  • The OB Reproductive Medicine Ultrasound Service was created.

  • A Maxillofacial Prosthodontics Rehabilitation Clinic was initiated.
  • Kingdom-wide Anticoagulation Service network.
  • The new Oncology building became operational.
  • Accreditation of the major residency programs by the Saudi Council of Health Specialties (Saudi Board) took effect.

  • Integration of the Department of Neurosciences.
  • Establishment of an ultrasound unit for the purpose of fetal sonographic screening for anomalies and markers of chromosomal abnormalities.
  • Insertion of first electronic sphincter stimulator for anal incontinence (dynamic graciloplasty).

  • Telemedicine Center Network was established.
  • Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanning was acquired.
  • First diagnostic electron microscopy laboratory and cytogenetic laboratory was established in the Middle East.

  • Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Unit was established.

  • Successful separation of Siamese twins was performed.
  • The Postgraduate Education Center was inaugurated.
  • The Cleft Lip and Palate Program became operational.
  • Establishment of a National Cancer Registry based at KFSH&RC.

  • The Dental Implant Program was started.
  • The Section of Palliative Care Medicine, Department of Oncology was established.

  • Introduction of Modular Replacement system for limb salvage surgery.
  • Implementation of the Home Health Care Program.
  • First dedicated colorectal service in the Kingdom.
  • First restorative proctocolectomy for mucosal ulcerative colitis.

  • Life Support Training Center established.

1988

  • The Department of Cardiovascular Diseases was established. Service expanded to four cath labs, four ORs, nineteen CSICU beds and ten CCU beds.

1986

  • Accreditation of the residency programs by the Arab Board for Medical Specialties.
  • Flow cytometry laboratory established.
  • In Vitro Fertilization Unit (IVF) was opened.

1985

  • Baylor contract ends and a KFSH team is established consisting of cardiac surgery, adult cardiology and pediatric cardiology with one cath lab, one OR, four ICU beds and six CCU beds.
  • Outpatient Fetal Monitoring Unit was established.
  • The Orthognathic Combined Clinic was opened.
  • The first lithotripter was purchased in the Kingdom.
  • Immunohistochemistry laboratory started.

1984

  • Bone Marrow Transplant Unit was established.
  • KFSH&RC (Academic Affairs) was designated as the test center in the Kingdom of the Foreign Medical Graduate
  • Examination in the Medical Sciences and ECFMG English test, later changed to the USMLE.
  • Approval of CME Program accreditation through the Ohio State University.
  • Gynecology Oncology Section opened.

  • Cyclotron and Radiopharmaceuticals Department acquired major pieces of equipment.
  • Establishment of Academic and Research Affairs.
  • The Scholarship Program for physicians was established and a number of qualified physicians were sent abroad for training.
  • The Department of Oncology was established, which consisted of medical oncology, pediatric oncology, and radiation oncology.
  • Outpatient Fetal Monitoring Unit was established.

  • College of American Pathologists Accreditation–the first in Asia.
  • Maternal Fetal Medicine Section (Perinatology) opened.
  • HLA testing for transplantation started.

  • The maiden issue of King Faisal Specialist Hospital Medical Journal (now Annals of Saudi Medicine) was published.

  • Cardiac surgery started as part of the Department of Surgery with a team from Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, USA.
  • First Cardiac Surgical Center in Saudi Arabia.
