Program Mission

The primary mission of the program of Internal Medicine is to provide optimal and evidence based medical care, consultations for patients at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSH&RC) and to carry out research and training in cooperation with other departments at KFSH&RC to fulfill the mission of the Hospital.

The Department provides diagnostic and therapeutic services to patients with diseases usually treated by the different sub-specialties of internal medicine. This includes allergic and immunologic diseases, endocrine diseases, gastrointestinal tract and liver diseases, infectious diseases and acquired-immune deficiency, diseases of the kidneys and urinary tract, diseases of the respiratory system and rheumatological conditions.

Currently, these outpatient and inpatient services are provided by staff consultants, associate consultants, assistant physicians, fellows and residents.

As for teaching, the program of Internal Medicine provides a strong training environment to young physicians, which prepares them to be qualified, professional and competent physicians. In addition the department provides sub-specialty Fellowship Programs for extra training in sub-specialty areas.

The Department of Medicine undertakes research in several areas of clinical relevance to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In addition it’s involved some basic medical research in collaboration with the Research Centre.

We believe that the quality of patient care depends greatly on the quality of teaching activity and research interests of our faculty. An institution with a good Residency Training Program is expected to provide high quality patient care.

The Residency Training Program follows the regulations and requirements of the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCHS), as the duration of training is 4 years where the trainee is required to rotate in different specialty under umbrella of Medicine specialty and later they are granted certificate which allows to apply for fellowship program.

The KFSH&RC experience

Most of the residents who graduated as well as the residents that are currently still in training in KFSH&RC agree that working in KFSH&RC provides you with a unique experience not found in any other hospital in the area. And while it can certainly be challenging at times, overcoming and learning from these challenges will undoubtedly help you excel in your career.

Here are some examples.

Patient population

One of the many things that define the KFSH&RC experience is the patient population, as the leading center for transplant and oncology in the area, you will be exposed to a wide variety of interesting/ challenging cases during your training. From renal, liver, lung, and heart transplant to BMT and patient receiving CAR T-cell therapy. Along of course with more direct and usual cases.

RRT and CODE GREEN

As an Internal medicine resident in KFSH&RC, you will be leading the Rapid response team (RRT) and CODE TEAM. RRT is a team that is in place to assure that sick patients are addressed promptly. It is activated once the patient meets one of its criteria. CODE GREEN is activated once a patient has cardiopulmonary arrest.

Being the first responder and managing patients in these acute/ critical settings is also part of the KFSH&RC experience, especially when considering the patient population mentioned beforehand.

KACOLD on-call

Nothing summarizes/ encompasses the two mentioned points quite like working in King Abdullah Centre For Oncology and Liver Disease ( KACOLD). It houses the transplant patient and patients under hematology and Oncology. During your 2nd year, you will be tasked with covering on-calls there. A memorable experience by all means and a cornerstone of the KFSH&RC experience. Finishing this challenging yet rewarding task helps shape the senior residents of KFSH&RC.
