KFSHRC Introduces Advanced Technology to Enhance Precision in Brain Tumor Removal

Precision in Brain Tumor Removal-Designs_News Website

King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSHRC) in Jeddah has successfully adopted an innovative medical technology that enhances the precision of brain tumor removal surgeries. The technique involves administering a special substance to the patient before surgery, causing tumor cells to fluoresce under specific light during the procedure. This allows surgeons to clearly distinguish between healthy and affected tissues, improving complete tumor removal rates by up to 30%, which positively impacts patient recovery and reduces the likelihood of residual cancer cells.

KFSHRC is the first hospital in the Kingdom to implement this technology, known as 5-Aminolevulinic Acid, as part of its routine surgical practice, reinforcing its position as a leading center for advanced surgical care. This innovation addresses the challenges associated with removing high-grade gliomas, a type of brain tumor notorious for blending into surrounding healthy tissue, making traditional surgeries more complex and risky.

In line with its role as a premier medical institution, KFSHRC is collaborating with hospitals across the Kingdom and internationally to share expertise and expand the adoption of this technique. This collaborative effort reflects KFSHRC’s ongoing commitment to integrating cutting-edge innovations to enhance patient care and deliver world-class healthcare solutions.

It is noteworthy that KFSHRC has been ranked first in the Middle East and North Africa and 15th globally in the list of the world’s top 250 Academic Medical Centres for the second consecutive year and has been recognized as the most valuable healthcare brand in the Kingdom and the Middle East, according to the 2025 Brand Finance rankings. Additionally, in the same year, it was ranked among the world's best 250 hospitals and included in the World’s Best Smart Hospitals list for 2025 by Newsweek magazine.
