In a pioneering medical milestone in Saudi Arabia, King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSHRC) in Jeddah has successfully performed the Kingdom’s first Robotic Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy with immediate reconstruction in a single procedure by one team. This breakthrough represents a major advancement in surgical precision and patient safety, offering faster recovery and improved cosmetic outcomes that elevate quality of life.
The complex surgery was carried out by Dr. Eman Khayat, Consultant in Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Breast Surgery, on a medically eligible patient using a state-of-the-art robotic system. By avoiding large incisions and direct manual intervention, the procedure significantly reduced postoperative pain, minimized complication risks, and shortened the hospital stay.
Dr. Khayat noted that the integration of Nipple sparing mastectomy with immediate reconstruction in a single procedure done by one team using the robot reducing the need for multiple surgeries. “This innovative approach reduces the physical and psychological burden on patients, shortens the recovery period, and preserves both the natural appearance and sensation of the breast,” she said. “By using small incisions away from the breast itself, robotic surgery also minimizes scarring and improves long-term cosmetic results.”
Robotic-assisted breast surgery is among the latest global advancements in surgical oncology, offering superior control and precision for surgeons. This technology allows access to difficult-to-reach areas through minimally invasive incisions, resulting in safer tumor removal, enhanced cosmetic results, and a quicker return to normal life.
This achievement joins a growing list of surgical milestones at KFSHRC-Jeddah, which include the Kingdom’s first fully robotic Whipple procedure for pancreatic cancer and the first robotic trans-anal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS). These successes further establish KFSHRC-Jeddah as a national reference center for advanced surgical innovation and patient-centered care.
This accomplishment reflects KFSHRC’s strategic commitment to advancing clinical excellence and applying cutting-edge technology to elevate patient outcomes. It reinforces the hospital’s vision of being the provider of choice for specialized healthcare and a leader in medical innovation across the region.
It is noteworthy that King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre has been ranked first in the Middle East and Africa and 15th globally in the list of the world’s top 250 Academic Medical Centers for 2025.
