Overview

Dr. Nadjad Abdul Rahim is exploring ways to transform lab-based discoveries into applicable tools that can be used in clinics and wards. This crucial development of medical devices requires great quality and care, and he reduces the risks involved by working in an ISO-13485-compliant manner. On the horizon, Dr. Nadjad is exploring new methods in the rapidly advancing field of sequencing, from the chemistry of kits to bioinformatics which can be applied to a wide field of clinical applications from cancer to infectious diseases.

Dr. Nadjad also leads the development of affordable, highly sensitive and multiplexed detection of viruses for use in wastewater-based epidemiology. He is also actively working on machine learning and bioinformatics methods to develop datasets suitable for future medicines.

Career Background

Dr. Nadjad completed his PhD in the National University of Singapore under the supervision of Prof Jackie Ying. He was appointed as the Research Director of A*STAR spin-off, Cellbae Pte Ltd, winning a competitive Singapore Food Agency (SFA) Agriculture Productivity Fund R&D Grant ($691,263) as the Principal Investigator researching multiplexed detection of poultry production diseases. He then followed on as Product Development and Operations Director, where he led design, validation and manufacturing of molecular PCR kits, overseeing the whole suite of activities from research to market. He also led a successful clinical trial validation for lateral flow assay. Cellbae also provided molecular testing services for the surveillance of aquatic animals in the whole of Singapore. He led the team in the first identification of Tilapia Lake Virus (TiLV) in Singapore following an episode of significant fishkill affecting farms. Dr Nadjad has been awarded the Public Service Medal by the Republic of Singapore.
